Domain forwarding lets you redirect visitors from one domain to another. URL masking keeps your domain name visible in the browser even when forwarding.
What is the Difference?
| Feature | What Happens | URL Shows |
|---|---|---|
| Domain Forwarding | Redirects to destination URL | Destination URL (e.g., yoursite.com/page) |
| URL Masking | Shows destination content in a frame | Your domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) |
Common Use Cases
- Multiple domains to one site: Forward brandname.net to brandname.com
- Short URLs: Forward short.link to your full website URL
- Marketing campaigns: Track specific domains for different campaigns
- Typo protection: Forward common misspellings to your main domain
How to Set Up Domain Forwarding
- Log into the Client Area
- Go to Domains then My Domains
- Click on the domain you want to forward
- Find Forwarding or URL Forwarding settings
- Enter the destination URL (include https://)
- Choose redirect type:
- 301 Permanent: Best for SEO, tells search engines the move is permanent
- 302 Temporary: For short-term redirects
- Enable URL Masking if you want your domain to stay visible
- Save changes
SEO Considerations
Use 301 redirects for permanent forwarding to pass SEO value to the destination. Avoid URL masking for your main business site, as it can cause SEO issues (search engines may see duplicate content).
