Domain Locking (also called Registrar Lock or Transfer Lock) is a security feature that prevents unauthorized transfers of your domain to another registrar.
Why Domain Locking Matters
Without domain locking, a malicious actor who gains access to your email could:
- Transfer your domain to another registrar
- Change your nameservers to hijack your website
- Modify your contact information
- Hold your domain for ransom
How Domain Locking Protects You
When your domain is locked:
- Transfer requests are automatically rejected
- Critical settings cannot be changed without unlocking first
- Adds an extra layer of security beyond your password
How to Enable/Disable Domain Lock
- Log into the Client Area
- Go to Domains then My Domains
- Click on your domain
- Find Registrar Lock setting
- Toggle to Enabled (or Disabled if you are transferring)
When to Unlock Your Domain
You only need to unlock your domain when:
- Transferring to another registrar
- Changing registrant information in some cases
Best Practice: Keep your domain locked at all times except when you specifically need to transfer it.
